ReWild Fest

This festival is a focal point for the “rewild” movement — rewilding and de-paving Perth’s urban spaces. The festival aims to inspire the community to rethink hard surfaces and restore nature to urban spaces. There are public talks, interactive “making” sessions, and stalls of all sorts to explore. The festival aims to encourage people to take simple, tangible steps towards greening their own neighbourhoods. Speakers include Sabrina Hahn and Josh Byrne.

The Music of Lord Of The Rings & The Hobbit

Saturday April 11, 4pm, Riverside Theatre, Perth

With an orchestra, choir and guest artists, the voice of the actor who played Saruman, Sir Christopher Lee, introduces you to the musical landscape of J.R.R. Tolkien. From the menacing sounds of Mordor and the shrill attacks of the black riders to the lyrical melodies of the elves, fans will enjoy this musical journey to Middle-earth.

What happens when the world’s most famous ballet — Swan Lake — is reimagined as a circus spectacular? this work from circus company Circa features a sequined, flipper-wearing duck army, a burlesque Black Swan, and plenty of flying feathers. Touching, funny and a take on finding your true self.

Stella the elephant has a dream: to become an astronaut. Unfortunately, Space Command insists elephants don’t belong in orbit. Refusing to take no for an answer, Stella sets about building her own spaceship as she reaches for the stars. Based on the award-winning picture book by James Foley and adapted for the stage by Clare Testoni, this uplifting production is perfect for kids aged 8 to 12.

The genre-defying artist hits town in support of her debut album Goodbye (If You Call That Gone). The singer-songwriter has already gained a reputation as an exciting live performer. Illuminate WA

Friday April 17 to 18, 6:30pm to 10:30pm, Yagan Square, Perth

Yagan Square will be transformed into a living, breathing nocturnal landscape thanks to a spectacular light show. The centrepiece is Pulse, a looping light exhibition in the Yagan Square Amphitheatre by artists Rachael Dease and Giorgia Schijf. This installation features cascading strands of light that translate sound into motion, creating an illuminated canvas that reacts to a continuous performance of live music, dance, and Japanese drums.

Walking through Yagan Square, visitors will see artists from the Pilbara’s Spinifex Hill Studio illuminated on the digital tower. Drifting through the crowd will be Guiding Creatures, a trio of larger-than-life illuminated lantern puppets. Along the railway line, look out for Coral Trees, glowing inflatable sculptures reminiscent of a bioluminescent seascape, which will be breathing and swaying as though alive.

On the Stories Event Deck will be the interactive installation Echoes of Presence. Visitor movement will shape a world of light projections, smoke, and lasers. And on the Yagan Square Stairwell there will be Hexahedron, a luminous infinity cube. This is a family-friendly event.
