A Queensland Police staffer has been charged with dozens of hate crime offences.

The 50-year-old man works for the Protective Services Group, a specialised unit with police powers that provides security for government buildings, infrastructure and personnel.

He is facing 41 charges of using a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence.

A Queensland Police spokesman said they inform the public when a police services member faces serious allegations of misconduct to keep a high standard of transparency and accountability.

“This does not mean that the allegations against the member have been substantiated,” the spokesman said.

“Everyone in Queensland has a right to feel safe and the Queensland Police Service (QPS) remains committed to community safety and engaging with people from across our culturally diverse society to help foster relationships and build upon platforms for community engagement.

A police spokesman said hate crimes were a criminal matter in Queensland and perpetrators would be held accountable when reported to police.

“Instances of serious vilification and hate crime are a criminal matter in Queensland, and where these are reported to police, investigations will be undertaken to prosecute those responsible.”

The accused staffer was arrested by police and faced Brisbane Magistrates Court on Monday.

Police urged anyone to report hate crimes and serious vilification to Crime Stoppers.
