An Albany student has earned praise for her culinary talents after competing against some of the State’s most promising young cooks in the finals of a competition in Perth.
Year 11 student Shanae Meldrum represented Australian Christian College Southlands at the Hospitality Group Training Taste of the Future competition on June 3 when she showcased her skills in a high-pressure kitchen environment.
The Taste of the Future competition provides aspiring chefs with an opportunity to test their skills, gain industry experience, and receive feedback from hospitality professionals.
Ms Meldrum competed against Year 11 and 12 students from across WA, and was one of 12 finalists competing for the gong.
Each finalist was given one hour to prepare their food, and 45 minutes to cook it.
In the final, Ms Meldrum prepared a creamy Tuscan chicken served with garlic naan, broccolini and crispy chicken skin.
Her dish received glowing feedback from the judges, who praised both the quality of the meal and her performance throughout the competition.
Ms Meldrum said being in the kitchen and cooking meals had always been a favourite place.
“The kitchen has always been more than just a room in my eyes,” she said.
“It is my happy place.
“I love serving and plating all my delicious food and drinks that I serve to my family and other people.
“Being a chef to me isn’t just preparing and cooking food — it is about creativity, passion, and bringing happiness to other people.”
ACC Southlands food technology teacher Ebonee van Burgel said the school was incredibly proud of Ms Meldrum’s achievement.
“We are so proud of Shanae for showcasing outstanding culinary skills, creativity, and remaining calm under pressure in a high-stakes kitchen environment,” she said.
“Many of the other students struggled with the tight time frame and intense pressure but Shanae remained completely composed and was one of the first to present her dish.
“She received outstanding feedback from the judges, proving she is a natural in the kitchen who will undoubtedly make an amazing chef one day.
“Shanae’s dish was absolutely delicious and received some great feedback, which is a fantastic achievement.”
