More than 40 riders took part in Albany Mountain Bike Club’s latest cross-country event held at the historic and picturesque Camp Quaranup facility last Sunday.

Forty-two riders with almost half the field consisting of four age brackets, the under-15s, 13s, 11s and 9s, enjoyed the rare sunny afternoon to compete.

Rising youngster Harper O’Donnell destroyed his dad Paul to take out the men’s A-grade category.

Nigel Holden also put in a great ride to take out third.

Dinah Roecker claimed victory in the women’s A-grade event, with a time that would have given the riders in the men’s B-grade a run for their money.

The men’s B-grade race was dominated by a contingent of strong A-grade-class riders.

Mt Barker’s Dwayne Sobey produced a superb ride to finish second.

Two debutantes proved too strong in the women’s B-grade race.

Cathie Contier finished first ahead of Denmark’s Nicole Smyth as they put in gruelling efforts in a challenging introduction to the sport.

AMBC president Dora Adeline said it was great to have so many kids participating.

“The kids field is simply too large to report on and is a great sign for our growing young talent,” she said.

“The young ones had a great time riding the features around the finishing line with their mates during the seniors’ race, in the unique setting near the Cheynes IV whale chaser.”

The AMBC said it was grateful for Camp Quaranup and the Department of Sport and Recreation for hosting the event at such a historic and inspirational setting with riders keenly awaiting another shot at it next year.
