A host of eager local grommets are itching to hit the waves competitively for next month’s Junior Wavefest.

Albany Boardriders’ annual Junior Wavefest competition was wiped out two days prior to it happening because of COVID-19 last year, but a year on, things look much brighter for the young surfers.

The competition will return on March 27 and 28, and already there is great interest from local groms to take part.

Nominations are open until March 8 and the event will cater for competitors of all abilities in the under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16 and under-18 divisions, along with push-in and rookie categories.

Albany Boardriders president David Beeck said there had already been great interest in this year’s event given the cancellation in 2020.

“Last year was disappointing with it being cancelled just two days before the event so we are really keen for this year,” he said.

“We are keen to just get everyone back together and have a competition. A lot of people went into hiding after the restrictions last year.

“We want to make it a really fun day and have lots of kids participating.

“Kids will receive a shirt and bag of gifts for participating, encouraging them to sign up and take part.

“Native Dog Surf Wax have come on board as a new major sponsor this year and have donated a heap of wax and shirts.”

The club is looking at Muttonbird Beach or Ocean Beach to hold this year’s event but that will be confirmed in the days beforehand, depending on weather conditions.

To enter, competitors need to be Albany Boardriders members and register online at albanysurf.com prior to March 8.

The Junior Wavefest is one of two major surf competitions the club holds every year in the Great Southern.
