Saturday’s NAIDOC Round of the Great Southern Football League is always a highlight of the competition and clubs are promising to bring their rich Indigenous culture to the fore again this year.

The clash of the round is the contest between Denmark-Walpole and Royals with its star-spangled inclusions of Josh Kennedy and Lewis Jetta but the other sides in the competition are aiming not to be outdone.

Albany will sport jumpers designed by local artist Brianna Williams while Sharks reserves’ players Taylor Coyne and Cameron Gravestock will debut their new dance troupe Bilya Wirrin (River Spirit) before the league contest against Railways, who will also be kitted out in their Indigenous uniforms.

Albany president Tracy Blaszkow said players throughout the grades had been keen to wear the Williams-designed jumpers, featuring a wonderful giant shark.

“We have ordered them for all four grades because the young ones were asking ‘why can’t we wear those cool jumpers?’” she said.

“It’s great that we have players in our own club getting involved in the NAIDOC Round; it makes it more special and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Denmark-Walpole president Sam Keenan confirmed player Jayden Pickett had organised a welcome to country with Uncle Lindsay Dean and an Indigenous dance troupe will perform before the big game featuring the ex-AFL stars.

Royals will be wearing new jumpers throughout their grades, designed by former player Aaron Williams, and also have a limited edition of polo shirts made especially for the occasion.

Also, up for auction will be the jersey worn by Jetta during the game.

North Albany painted their field for NAIDOC Round when they hosted two years ago and will mark this year’s clash against Mt Barker with Indigenous jumpers and a welcome to country.

The Bulls will wear their Indigenous jumpers.

All three contests will feature best-on-ground awards with recipients taking home the match ball.

North Albany will host Mt Barker at Collingwood Park and Albany will be at home at Retravision Stadium against Railways.

The much-hyped Denmark-Walpole and Royals clash will be at McLean Park.
