Lower Great Southern dominate southern bowling zone’s interleague round robin competition at Albany Bowls Club
Lower Great Southern became the southern bowling zone’s interleague champions, dominating the tournament held at Albany Bowling Club on January 9-11.
The icing on the cake for their victory was the selection of the Albany club’s John Davidson, Wayne Jones and Craig Hitchcock for the southern zone team which will contest the inter zone tournament, starting at Halls Head on Saturday.
They will be joined by teammates Matt Mitchell, Kelvin Crosby, Andrew McFarlane and Stephen Tuffley (all Emu Point), Trevor Pieper (Mt Barker Golf), Sean Brown (Denmark Riverside) and Geoff Hornibrook (Middleton Beach).
The interzone round robin is WA’s premier annual competition and features four sides — Eastern, Northern, South-Western and Southern.
Lower Great Southern’s victory in Albany came against the leagues of Central Stirling, South East Coastal, Great Southern, Upper Great Southern and South Central Arunga.
With each contest lasting 21 ends, LGS opened their campaign with a 76-64 overall win over Upper Great Southern and followed it up with a 104-46 cruise against Great Southern.
It was closer in round three, but SEC were narrowly defeated 87-71 with Brown’s 27-8 win on rink three against Jayson Fiegert proving the difference.
Central Stirling proved to be Lower Great Southern’s main rivals in the end, but they did not come close in their round robin contest, going down 93-73 to the eventual champions.
Lower Great Southern’s last contest was against SCA and ended 82-66 with the bottom-placed side putting up strong challenges in rinks two and three.
Emu Point’s Kevin MacGregor did well to hold off Kulin’s Ash Byres 21-18 while Brown shared the spoils 16-16 with Newdegate’s skip Jason Davey.
Lower Great Southern topped the table with 10 points from their five wins.
Central Stirling (eight points) were second with South East Coastal (six) third.
