New Albany marina water access staircase finished and almost ready for swimmers to use

A staircase allowing swimmers easy access into the Albany marina is nearing completion, with the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure project soon to officially open.

Located on the western side of the rock groyne in front of Due South Tavern before the jetty, the Albany Marina water access staircase provides a more formal point for entering the water rather than forcing swimmers to clamber down the steep rocks.

The structure consists of a platform and set of steps with handrails that descend into the shallow water.

Landing ramps bookmark the top and bottom of the staircase.

Contractors Jetty & Marine Constructions Pty Ltd began work on the staircase on June 22 and finished midway through July.

The project is run through the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure and funded in part by the State Government.

While it has reached practical completion, the stairs are not yet open to the public, with construction tape still barring entry.

A DTMI spokesperson said a “soft launch” would take place in the coming weeks.

Swimmers have waited in eager anticipation for the stairs to open, formalising access to the popular scenic swimming spot.
