Mt Barker police are investigating a serious crash in Woogenellup at the weekend where a 17-year-old girl was airlifted to Perth with serious injuries after her car hit a tree, trapping her inside.

Police say the girl was driving a Mitsubishi Triton ute on Knight Road, east of Mt Barker, on Saturday at about 12.10pm when the car left the road and crashed into a tree.

The 17-year-old driver sustained serious injuries and was trapped in the car.

Four crews from Albany and Mt Barker fire and rescue services took about 40 minutes to free the girl from the vehicle, before the RAC Rescue helicopter arrived at 1.40pm to airlift her to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The ute hit the tree at “high velocity”, according to a Department of Fire Emergency Services spokesperson.

Police ask anyone in the area around the time of the crash, with information or dash-cam footage, to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or report online at crimestopperswa.com.au.

WA Police say they are committed to enforcing the law on our roads, and in particular will continue to target those offences known as “the fatal five” which they know are over-represented in serious and fatal crashes.

These are speeding, impaired driving (drugs/alcohol), non-use of restraints/helmets, distracted driving (use of mobile phones) and fatigue.
