Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions steps in to help preserve historic Leeuwin waterwheel

Augusta’s historic Cape Leeuwin Water Wheel will receive preservation works as the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions commits to stopping its water flow to protect the timber. The well-known landmark, which falls within the region’s Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park, was recently subject to expert review as part of a revised management approach, the agency said this week. The device was built in 1895 to power hydraulics supplying fresh water to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse and nearby homes. Until now, water has kept running through the device to preserve it, but the review found keeping the water wheel wet had accelerated timber decay. DBCA’s Blackwood district parks and visitor services co-ordinator Rory Chapple said former WA Museum artefact specialist Ian MacLeod conducted the review amid concerns the structure had deteriorated further. “Paradoxically, keeping the waterwheel wet has accelerated the deterioration of its timber components,” Mr Chapple said. “By stopping the flow of water to the flume, we’re actually taking a crucial step toward long-term preservation of this valuable piece of WA’s heritage.” The DBCA plans to work with the Augusta Historical Society on the review’s recommendations, with work including applying treatments to the timber structure, which is a registered heritage site. “The important wetland habitat for the threatened Cape Leeuwin freshwater snail species will also be protected,” Mr Chapple said. “By adjusting our approach, we’re not only ensuring the water wheel’s preservation, but also allowing the spring to recover in response to the region’s drying climate. “This is a win for both heritage and the environment.”
