The annual Margaret River Art Auction will take place this weekend, but the grand prize winner has already been announced.

Perth artist and former Margaret River resident has Eveline Kotai scored the $3000 main prize ahead of tomorrow’s 15th iteration of the popular fundraiser co-ordinated by Forest Grove’s Margaret River Independent School.

Local artists and competition judges Sean Atkinson and Paula Cristoffanini said they were impressed by the range of art up for grabs this weekend.

Other artists who received commendations were Jenny Barr, Charlie Norton, Deanne Haddow, Karl Heussenstamm and Kay Gibson.

Kotai’s piece Silver Spirals was a reflection of the artist’s practice, Cristoffanini said.

“The viewer is barely aware of the textile as its transforms and transcends its medium,” she said.

Kotai’s 40-year career has included mixed media, pastels and drawing, printmaking and textile arts. She lived down south for seven years in the 1980s and said her time in the region had solidified her artistic approach.

Kotai said the annual art auction was a great chance for practitioners to showcase their works as well as support MRIS.

The art auction starts at the HEART at 6pm tomorrow.

Tickets are available at the door and online via Eventbrite.
