Fishing fanatics of all ages are encouraged to cast their rods and register for the upcoming Open Beach Fishing Competition on January 10.

The annual contest, run by the Harvey Districts Water Sports Association (Binningup Fishing Club), sees competitors fish between the Bunbury Cut and Preston Beach for a share of $8000 in prizes.

This year marks the seventh consecutive year that entrants can sign up and hook a prize. Whitey’s Tackle and Camping Treendale manager Ben White said the competition was good for the community and had a great atmosphere.

“It’s the only land-based fishing competition down here; all of the others are on boats,” Mr White said. “From the shore, people will be aiming to catch tailor, whiting, herring and maybe mulloway.

There are usually about 500 entrants between the senior and junior divisions, however the turnout is dependent on the weather.

The entry fee is $10 for seniors, $5 for juniors and $25 for families.

Registration forms can be picked up from the HDWSA Club, Binningup General Store, Myalup General Store, RG Upton & Co and Whitey’s Tackle and Camping Treendale before January 10.
