An exciting project to establish the Ferguson Valley as a stand-out arts destination has moved to the next stage after submissions closed for an artist to help create a public art trail.

The selected artist-in-residence will lead discussions with the community to develop a Ferguson Valley Public Art Trail that combines unique community stories with the scenic environment of the tourist destination.

Splashes of colour can be found throughout the shire where murals following a native birdlife theme have been painted in Millbridge, Eaton, Dardanup and Burekup — an option that could be followed in the Ferguson Valley.

The project aims to increase community participation in and with the arts, celebrate unique community stories and continue the Dardanup Shire Council’s commitment to creative industries.

The idea for an art trail in the Ferguson Valley was floated in December when the council supported the development of a concept plan and will contribute to the well-established artistic hub created by the Dardanup Arts Spectacular, as well as provide a connection to the new high-profile Wellington Dam mega-mural.

The artist for the residency is expected to be selected this week to help develop the concept plan, which includes how local artists and businesses are able to contribute pieces to the trail, where the artwork will be located and any relevant themes.
