BDCA 2023: BDCA superpower Colts directly advance to grand final as Leschenault falter at home
Colts skipper Josh Topliss proved on Saturday at Leschenault Recreation Park that men can multitask — especially when it matters most.
Aware he would be required for a significant off-field personal commitment, Topliss hastily burst into the middle and snared 3-11 from his eight overs against Leschenault in the BDCA first-grade second semifinal, before leaving to fulfil his obligation off the field.
Watching on via Leschenault’s Frogbox stream, Topliss had another reason to smile, as his men defeated the Green Caps by three wickets to advance directly into the grand final.
The visitors had the better of the opening exchanges, with in-form seamer Julius Sumerauer (4-23 off 10 overs) tormenting Leschenault’s batting card from the pavilion end.
Aside from Sumerauer’s feats, Brian Hughes was extremely effective behind the stumps, gloving four catches and making the most of every opportunity.
A youngster who has been backed in by his senior teammates for several years, Hughes also played a critical role late in the game, with his unbeaten knock of 19 — including two late boundaries — ultimately getting the visitors over the line.
Although they would have been disapointed with being rolled for 100 in a home semifinal, Leschenault fought the game out until the very end, with UK imports Jamie Harrison and Oliver Currill delivering once again with both bat and ball.
Additionally, quality spinner Shehzad Gondal (2-16 off 10 overs) bowled his heart out as always, and could give Marist some headaches in Saturday’s preliminary final.
For Colts, another grand final appearance awaits, with the BDCA superpower within touching distance of securing another trophy for their overflowing cabinet at the Bunbury Recreation Ground.
