Bunbury author’s book aims to inspire
A Bunbury author has turned her gruelling experience with a rare type of blood cancer into a book to help share the messages she has learnt about self-acceptance.
Mandy Roney — who publishes under her maiden name, Duggan — has recently released her book Lifting the Lid, an autobiographical mix of memoir and prose that focuses on how her cancer diagnosis changed her relationship with herself.
“My diagnosis with a rare incurable blood cancer set me on a new journey,” she said.
It led her to start a blog detailing her experience, which later fed into her books.
“Whatever it takes to tip your world upside down, that helps you figure out your relationship with yourself,” Ms Roney said.
“I blogged through my treatment and it helped me discover my relationship with myself and to also keep things real.
Lifting the Lid is about discovering concepts I had to confront and no longer suppressing feelings and potential.
Ms Roney said the book was real, raw and full of heart and soul.
“It’s about the stuff people often shy away from and I explore what it means to really be there for yourself,” she said.
Lifting the Lid will be launched on Sunday and marks the third instalment in Ms Roney’s career as a published author.
“I could focus on dying, but I choose to focus on living. I choose to be myself,” she said.
“I hope my message resonates with the reader and people read it and implement it.”
