Bunbury kids fighting diseases join Big W and children’s hospital to raise funds to bring care to sick kids

Bunbury kids fighting diseases have joined the quest to raise funds to help bring care and comfort to sick kids and their families this Christmas. The Charity Wrap and Heart Token fundraising initiative — hosted by Big W — invited the community to join it in championing some of the country’s bravest kids this festive season, with the launch of wrapping paper and tags designed by the children. This year’s Heart Tokens feature designs from two Bunbury children. Four-year-old Charlie Blackwood and 14-year-old Matilda Pitts — who have both been supported by Perth Children’s Hospital Foundation. Charlie was flown to Perth Children’s Hospital for emergency surgery straight after birth and at 11 days old was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, which would then see him endure multiple surgeries at a young age. While he is now a happy and cheerful four-year-old, he continues to receive ongoing treatment from PCH, all with a smile that brings joy to those around him. Charlie’s mother, Marlene Blackwood, said he was excited to see his creation — made with the help of his big sister, Matilda Blackwood — come to life at Big W branches. “He absolutely loves Christmas and all its magic, but for Charlie and other kids living with medical conditions, treatment and care don’t stop, not even for Christmas,” she said. “It’s a beautiful reminder that the spirit of the season shines through in their strength, imagination and joy.” Matilda Pitts also made the journey to PCH last year after doctors discovered a tumour in her spine, which saw her undergo a series of intense surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation. Her hospital journey continues with remarkable courage, and her passion for art and the support of the community has been a source of strength. PCHF chief executive officer Carrick Robinson said while Christmas was a time of joy, warmth and family for many, it could be a challenging time for families of sick children. “This year, funds raised through Big W’s Charity Wrap and Tokens will help support a range of innovative cancer programs at Perth Children’s Hospital, bringing hope and comfort to more than 110 children and their families across Western Australia, like Matilda, who face the heartbreak of a cancer diagnosis each year,” Mr Robinson said. “We encourage all Western Australians to give with heart and make a big difference for kids in need.” Big W managing director Dan Hake said the company had a long-standing partnership with the children’s hospital and research partners across Australia. “Our store teams are dedicated to making a real difference in their local communities, and with their efforts and the incredible generosity of our customers, together we can bring hope and joy to children and families when they need it most,” he said. All the proceeds from the $5 wraps and $2 tokens go to Big W’s children’s hospital and research partners nationwide.
