Bunbury Port silo build named best regional project at South West Building Excellence Awards

High achievers in the South West building industry were celebrated at the annual South West Building Excellence Awards held at Black Brewing Co. on Saturday. Perkins Builders was named winner of the Best Regional Project South West award for the company’s work on the Bunge Silo 4 Project at Bunbury Port. The building firm was responsible for delivering the civil, steel, and concrete packages for the seventh silo which features an underground tunnel with a ramp and a one metre thick silo base. Master Builders senior judge Glenn Smith said the level of entries this year was impressive. “South West builders take great pride in producing high quality and unique homes in the South West region; this year’s projects were some of the best we have seen in recent years,” he said. “The results showcased the ability to bring the best out from all their subcontractors and suppliers and produce the workmanship everyone is proud of.” Hemp Homes Australia was another big winner as it took home the Best Country Home award for the luxury Indica Hemp Home. The house is made from industrial hemp grown in the region in the form of “hempcrete”. The builder took home five other awards including Excellence in Alternative Finishes, External Finishes and Supervisor of the Year (Gary Rogers). Master Builders president Michael Van Dongen said the quality of entries was especially impressive given the difficult time for the industry. “These awards are a true show of the strength of our industry and the commitment and contribution that Master Builders members make to it,” he said. “It’s been a tough year, but tonight was about celebrating that hard work and showcasing the very best our industry has to offer. “I want to congratulate all the winners. Taking out one of these awards is a defining moment in the career of any builder, and I can say that from experience. “It shows you have what it takes to mix it with the best in the business.”
