Bunbury Senior High School’s Kingia Z club presents Harbour with Christmas boxes to help those in need

As the 16 Days in WA campaign draws to a close, students from Bunbury Senior High School have shown their support and commitment to helping women and children in the community. On Monday, students from the Kingia Z club presented Harbour, previously South West refuge, with about 21 Christmas boxes filled with essential items. The boxes also included little gifts and kindness messages from the students. Harbour partnerships and marketing co-ordinator Briana Clatworthy said the packages helped the refuge to provide more than just the basics for women and children in need. “This also benefits ladies that are outside in the community, living in their own homes that (are) just stretched to the limit with paying utilities and rent, and this gives them that little bit of extra stuff,” she said. “Even if it’s toiletries, shampoo, conditioner, just knowing that they’ve got that support out in the community is really lovely.” Year 10 student and charter member of the club Salome Woodland said she enjoyed working with like-minded people to help create change. “It’s awesome because we get to see the changes we make right here in our local community,” she said. Year 11 student Skye Smith said she enjoyed putting together the packages knowing the work they put in would make a difference to people in the area. With “play your part” being the theme for 2025’s 16 Days in WA campaign, Zonta Club Bunbury advocacy committee chair Tyril Houghton said the students had played their part big-time. She said Zonta aimed to advocate and raise awareness for community issues affecting women and girls to help make the world a better place. “Anything that encourages women to be the best that they can be and support them when they’re in crisis, that’s what we try to do,” she said. This isn’t the only contribution the student club have made to help raise awareness for ending violence against women during this year’s campaign, with the students helping the Zonta Club of Bunbury produce 2000 white ribbons.
