Bunbury students among Cinesnaps film comp finalists

Students at a Bunbury school have made the cut for the finals of this year’s Cinesnaps Short Film Competition.

A short film produced by four Year 10 students from Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School was among the seven finalists for the competition, which runs as part of CinefestOZ.

Student Olivia Teede said she was ecstatic to find out her team was among the finalists.

“I was extremely proud of our team for all the hard work and effort that was put into this production to create something that was final-worthy,” she said.

Fitting with the 2020 theme of “suitcase”, the students’ film follows the story of a girl left alone for the weekend with a newly found suitcase. As time passes, she grows increasingly suspicious and paranoid of the suitcase, but is reluctant to discard it.

Team member Julia Spencer said she was glad they entered and would encourage anyone who loved media to do the same.

“We never thought producing a five-minute short film would take up all of our spare time,” she said.

Juggling other commitments and schoolwork along with the production, it was definitely a challenge for us.

“It took up a lot of afternoons and weekends but was enjoyable and worth it in the end.”

The annual contest encourages aspiring film makers, aged 15 to 18 from South West schools, to create original three to five-minute short films.

Finalists will receive feedback from a panel of Australian industry professionals and the winner will announced on August 27 at the Cinesnaps grand final event in Busselton.
