City of Bunbury to be more accessible and inclusive through Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2023-2028

Bunbury is on a mission to become a more accessible and inclusive place to live and visit through a new Disability Access and Inclusion Plan.
According to the City, the plan will facilitate accessibility and inclusion for people with disability through the improvement of access to buildings, facilities, services and information.
The City said the Disability Access and Inclusion Plan 2023-2028 will benefit not only people with disability but the elderly, young parents and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, as well as the broader community.
Residents will be consulted on the plan throughout September, and Bunbury Mayor Jaysen Miguel encouraged the community to have their say throughout the process.
“We are wholeheartedly committed to improving accessibility and inclusion in Bunbury, and the City’s Disability Access and Inclusion Plan is a crucial document in making that happen,” Mayor Miguel said.
“Equally as important is the community input into reviewing the DAIP, so I encourage our entire community to take advantage of the opportunities in the City’s extensive community consultation process.
“I am proud of the work the City has done in this space to date, but there is always more we can be doing to make Bunbury more accessible and inclusive.”
The City’s inclusion officer Sue Alexander said she was committed to making herself available to anyone who might not be able to make the workshops or other sessions and encouraged people to reach out.
“Our community plays a very important part in the review of the City’s DAIP and our entire community is invited to be involved,” Ms Alexander said.
“The community’s feedback, especially from those with lived experience, is invaluable in guiding the priorities and outcomes of accessibility and inclusion in Bunbury.”
Under the Disability Services Act, the City must review the DAIP at least every five years, which it said would help in planning and implementing improvements and strategies to enhance access and inclusion through improvements to services and events, building and facilities, information, quality of service, complaints, consultation processes and employment.
