Donations wanted for care bags for homeless

The team at Doors Wide Open is asking for support in creating community care bags for the homeless and less fortunate.

Founder Lina Pugh said the centre was no longer seeing homeless people visit and instead wanted to bring the care packs to them.

“It’s about really looking after the people who are quite vulnerable and living below the poverty line,” Ms Pugh said.

It really is just providing some humanity in these really tough times.

The bags contain toothpaste and a toothbrush, deodorant, toilet paper, soup, canned goods and a note of encouragement among other items.

Ms Pugh said the bags were to get someone through a couple of days and would be something they would need to carry around.

“We’ve asked people to put in a letter or note of encouragement into the bag for the person that gets it,” she said.

Just that letter of encouragement from a stranger could make the world of difference and not just for the day, for some people that can be a lifetime difference.

Ms Pugh said they had 17 bags and were aiming to have 60.

“People have really jumped on board and given us a lot of support with it,” she said.

“We live in such a generous and blessed community where people are prepared to help the underdog.

“This is a fantastic way for the community to become involved in being somebody’s light at the end of the tunnel.”
