Staff from the Water Corporation are urging South West residents to trap the fat this Christmas.

While rinsing and flushing of fats, oils, grease and leftovers can cause problems all year round, it can be especially harmful to the wastewater system around this time of year.

When fat cools down it solidifies and can cause pipe blockages in internal property plumbing or the wastewater system.

“Blockages can lead to wastewater backing up in our system and possibly overflowing into your house, street, or nearby park,” Water Corporation spokeswoman Clare Lugar said.

Ms Lugar suggested trapping fat in a sealed container and putting it in the bin.
