Heartwarming effort for Donnybrook’s Kyran Doak hoping to visit Melbourne on 10c cans and bottles

A Donnybrook man living with disability is asking for the community’s support to help pay for a trip to Melbourne. Kyran Doak and his support worker Lynda Burke recently posted on Facebook calling for on the public to donate their 10c cans or bottles to raise funds for the visit, which he is hoping coincides with his 30th birthday. Ms Burke said the community has been “amazingly responsive” to the post. “I can’t believe how many times people just go, ‘I’ve got a trailer full of cans here’ or ‘we were going to give them to our kids, but we’ve had a family discussion and we’ve decided we’d rather give it to Kyran’, which is just beautiful,” she said. “In two circumstances, people have come up and they’ve said, ‘look, we don’t have the capacity for the cans but we’d like to give you some money instead’, so that’s been a lovely thing.” Ms Burke said Mr Doak was motivated to visit the Victorian capital after being fortunate enough to travel overseas twice. “Last year he went to Germany for his brother’s wedding and the family were gone three weeks for that event,” she said. “Prior to that, he had gone with his brother to Germany, France and England.” Ms Burke recently travelled to Albany for a three-day trip to prepare to provide support for Mr Doak’s future travel plans and said it was a positive experience. “Kyran is looking for a job in retail or hospitality,” she said. “He loves music and would also love to work with a DJ.”
