Madoda Fani brings world class South African-inspired ceramics to Bunbury

Showcasing a contemporary evolution of the traditional ceramics indigenous to Southern Africa, artist Madoda Fani is motivated to effect social change through his work. His ceramic-based artwork forms part of the Indian Ocean Craft Triennial 2024 which is being displayed in Bunbury. It is a physical representation of his talent and his inspiration. Fani, originally from Capetown, South Africa, makes hand coiled, burnished and smoke-fired pieces which feature in the international exhibition investigating the different cultures and languages represented in the contemporary craft space. “For me, it’s all about preserving the African heritage and also introducing it to the world because if you look at my work, the techniques that I use are very old, traditional techniques that we use to make pots in Africa,” he said. “That’s what I want to share in the world.” Being invited to take part in, and winning a prize at, an international art competition in 2000 was a turning point in Fani’s career he told the Herald, and it motivated him to continue creating with a focus on ceramics. “I entered a competition that was in Burkina Faso — I had just started doing ceramics professionally,” he said. “I was just trying my luck, but apparently they found us and said they wanted me to go there. So when I went there, it was my first trip out of my country (and) I won the second prize.” Fani said there was a lot to be learnt from art and he wanted to use his skill to teach this to others. “My dream is to open up an institution, a school, where I can teach kids, where other people also can help me to teach as well, and also a student exchange,” he said. “Looking back at my community at the moment, there’s a lot of drug abuse — young kids are getting into drugs and alcohol, there’s a lot of things that are happening — so I want to open up an institution where I will take kids from the streets to teach them art.” Fani told the Herald he wanted to bring awareness to social issues such as the environment and empowering women and young people. His work will feature at Bunbury Regional Art Gallery between August 10 and October 27.
