Man behind Brunswick siege arrested after allegedly breaking restraining order three times, is refused bail

A milk delivery driver on bail for a domestic siege in Brunswick is back in jail after an alleged week-long harassment of his former partner. The court was told Clint Gordon Ellis, 45, had allegedly threatened to kill his former partner and himself during the siege in June before being taken into custody by the police tactical response unit. Mr Ellis was due to appear in court on Thursday over the siege but instead was arrested by police that evening after he allegedly breached a family violence restraining order for the third time in a week. The court was told that when in police custody Mr Ellis had allegedly tried to tear up a love letter he had written to his former partner after days earlier driving past her house and shouting for her to call him, and on another day catching the same bus to try to give her roses. On being told she had called the police, he allegedly said: “I don’t give a f...”. Mr Ellis was on bail after being accused of a siege incident on June 26 in Brunswick, that had allegedly started after he believed his partner at the time had been having an affair. The police were called to break up a family violence incident. During this time it is alleged that Mr Ellis dragged his former partner by the hair through broken glass while threatening to shoot her with a rifle, then changing his mind, threatening to shoot himself. Mr Ellis said in court that the reason for the June siege was due to the relationship failing. “Yeah that’s the reason, I caught her out cheating, I lost it,” he said. Police negotiated for him to put the weapon down and he was taken into custody, later released on bail. However, Magistrate Atkins was not satisfied that no further offending would occur, and refused his bail. “He broke a court-ordered restraining order, two days later breaking it again, two days after that breaking it again,” she said. “What confidence can I have that he’s going to comply with the restraining order, let alone bail conditions?”. Mr Ellis was visibly distraught when Magistrate Atkins read her decision to refuse bail, yelling as he was escorted away: “She’s the one contacting me I swear, I just got my life together.” Mr Ellis faces three charges of breaching a VRO, on top of two charges of failure to comply with firearm or ammunition storage requirements, and one charge of unlicensed possession of dangerous goods, the latter of which he intends to plea not guilty to. Mr Ellis is next due in court on October 12.
