Miranda to set sail for her gold award

Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School student Miranda Fahie is set to complete the final hours of her Duke of Edinburgh gold medallion on board the Leeuwin as part of the Leeuwin Youth Explorer Voyage. Miranda was one of just 40 students selected for the voyage and is able to take part thanks to a generous Woodside scholarship worth up to $1500. The sponsorships are available to students who express an interest in marine science throughout their high school studies and involves a thorough application process taking into account academic results and future ambitions. Miranda said she was excited for the trip and was looking forward to the unique and highly-sought after experience. “I am hoping to challenge myself on the trip by being in a new environment and meeting new people and I am looking forward to being outdoors and learning lots of new skills,” she said. The Leeuwin voyage completes Miranda’s involvement in the Duke of Edinburgh program which she began in Year 8. Having already completed bronze and silver awards, Miranda was required to complete 52 hours in each of the three components — skill, physical recreation and voluntary service. “I am very proud of what I have been able to achieve and what I have been able to give back to my community in the form of service,” she said.
