More than 4500 swimmers take to the water for the Busselton Jetty Swim

The South West’s premier open water swimming event took place on Sunday, with more than 4500 swimmers diving in for the Busselton Jetty Swim.

Participants were greeted with warm conditions on the morning of the race, with the maximum temperature in town nudging 40C.

1578 males and 1582 females were registered for the 3.6km solo swim, while the one mile and 500m categories attracted more than 1000 entrants.

The male division of the big race was taken out by the South West’s Kyle Lee, who was the first to cross the line in a time of 38min6.0sec.

Lee, who grew up in Australind was run close by Adam Sudlow and Jack Wilson, who each broke the 39-minute barrier with times of 38:32.4 and 38:40.6 to finish second and third respectively.

The 21-year-old recently punched his ticket to the Paris Olympics by securing a top 10 place in the 10km race at the World Aquatic Championships in Doha, with his time of 1:48:31.2 good enough for a ninth-placed finish.

Young gun Rosie Wilson could not be stopped in the female swim, with her time of 43:46.8 nearly 100 seconds quicker than the second-placed finisher.

The One Mile Swim To Shore was taken out by Pamoana Pirikahu with a time of 21:23.3 in the male division and Ebony Bueddemann with a 23:12.4 in the female category.

A sprint race also featured in the form of the Simon’s 500m Shortcut Swim, with Lachlan Stiffle (7:06.7) and Jayde Scott (6:44.2) the male and female winners.
