NeuroKids launch South West-based nurse to help children with neurological conditions

Children with neurological conditions are set to get a little extra support as the NeuroKids service launches its first regional service. The Neurological Council of WA South West service launched on Wednesday with a dedicated NeuroKids nurse joining the existing Bunbury office. The nurse will do neurological nursing assessments, clinical education and symptom, medication and related mental health monitoring and management for South West clients. Funding for the nurses has comes from Telethon, the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation and the State Government. Neurological Council of WA chief executive Etta Palumbo said there were hundreds of debilitating conditions which meant children needed additional support. “With neurological conditions, they’re not curable. Depending on the nature of the condition they can be quite debilitating, very debilitating or terminal,” she said. “They’re always declining or requiring some form of management so if you think it’s something as simple as a headache or migraine most of us would go ‘oh that’s just something you take Panadol for’. “But for some people that leads them to be bedridden for a good proportion of their life and not engaged in society.” NeuroKids nurses provide care for young people with a variety of neurological conditions such as epilepsy, brain tumours and MND. The service was recently started in the metropolitan area with nurses delivering 531 appointments and 573 hours of direct care between January and June. “It is a really valuable and unique service and because it’s a nurse that’s providing the service it’s really important to understand that they can provide clinical support,” Ms Palumbo said. “There might be services who are doing a lot of the emotional support, but it’s really useful to have a nurse who can review medications and who can look at your vital signs like blood pressure and stuff like that and look for other clinical symptoms.” Those wanting to seek help from the service can call 1800 645 771 to talk to a neurological nurse or go the ncwa.com.au website.
