North Boyanup’s Justin Prentice could be destined for another chapter of sustained success, if the recent form of his four-year-old Tricky Miki is anything to go by.
The classy gelding, fresh from claiming the G1 Tabtouch Colts and Geldings Westbred Classic (2130m) at Gloucester Park last month, added another impressive victory to his career on Friday at Donaldson Park in Bunbury.
Driven by Gary Hall Jr, Tricky Miki scored by 26.1m over Rellim in the South Western Districts Council Derby (2100m) and rated a career-best 1:55:8. Been Scootin, trained by Greenbushes-based Ray Jones, ran third.
South West hopefuls shot to the front during the early stages, as both Hall Jr and Capel’s Aiden De Campo — who was piloting Floewriter — both read the start brilliantly following the release of the mobile.
Hall Jr wasted no time in crossing Prentice’s four-year-old over the pegs, where he would essentially stay for the remainder of the trip.
As the field got the bell, trainer-reinsman Dean Miller and Rellim bolted alongside the leader on the outside, while Tricky Miki’s stablemate, Rambo Rabbit, briefly sat directly behind him.
All challengers did little to faze the gelding, who with less than 400m to run, bolted clear and displayed why there are such high hopes for his future.
Earlier in the afternoon, punters were treated to a thrilling finish in the Benchmark Feeds and Duncan Equine Group 4YO+ Mares Pace (2100m), as Dove Cry pipped Busselton’s Oh So Grand by a head.
It was also an impressive meeting for driver Emily Johnson, who won the final three races on the card. Pacing at Donaldson Park returns on October 21.
