‘Speed dating’ and survey results may help South West organisations crack the code with young volunteers

A student-led survey has found balancing school work is the main barrier stopping young people from volunteering as organisations try to find new ways to connect students. A “speed-dating” event was held at Manea Senior College on Thursday, connecting 18 students with six organisations with the aim of working out how to better attract more young people to volunteer. One pupil who may hold the answer is Year 11 student Raya Noonan, who has helped create a survey on the topic which reached more than 200 students from years 10, 11 and 12. The key findings of the survey – which was co-designed with the Innovation Academy and Volunteer South West – found roughly two-thirds of respondents considered balancing volunteering commitments and academic studies a barrier. A lack of independent transport and anxiety around meeting new people ranked second and third respectively. Raya had one clear message to other young people: give volunteering a go. “It’s incredible and it opens so many doors and gives you so many good experiences and it’s just incredible,” she said. “I hope that volunteer organisations can take this stuff (from the survey) in and get better ideas of what kind of volunteer work that they want to put out there to appeal young people to come to them more and to get more of a clue from our age demographic. “Because it is a really incredible thing and I definitely think that more people need to be doing it.” The survey found volunteering with animals was the most appealing with 12.3 per cent of respondents saying it was the field which most interested them. Sports coaching, health care, environment, childcare and education were also popular, with each garnering more than eight per cent of votes. Investing in our Youth Blue Leaf coordinator Rebecca McLevie – whose organisation already relies on more than 20 young volunteers – was one organiser who said the event at the college gave them more insight. “One of the biggest takeaways for me was to not put an age limit on stuff, but instead ... advertise a position as Year 10-plus or Year 11-plus, because if you’re 15 turning 16, it means you don’t get the same opportunities as your friends.”
