SWFL 2022: Trigwell the hero for SWFL on day one after late goal snuffs out Upper Great Southern

The SWFL senior team recorded a thrilling 4.6 (30) to 4.1 (25) win over Upper Great Southern in their opening Nutrien Ag Solutions country football championship round robin match on Friday. Played at Fremantle Oval, the SWFL trailed until the final 20 seconds of play, before a confident Zac Trigwell coolly slotted through his second goal from point-blank range to secure the win. The division one match was even across all areas of the ground. However, the class of Sam Lewis, Braden Fimmano and experience of Jon Meadmore ultimately swung the balance of power into the hands of the SWFL. Things were more one-sided later in the afternoon against Peel, with the SWFL running out convincing 6.9 (45) to 2.4 (16) victors. The SWFL began strongly against the Cavaliers, with Thomas Wood and Paul Rinder dominating the centre corridor, which allowed their onballers to provide silver service to the forward line. Patrick Farrant and Trigwell caused plenty of problems for their Peel opponents, while Lewis’ pace on the half-forward flank also caught the eye. Although Peel gradually gained some momentum in the contest as time wore on, they left their run too late, finishing winless on the opening day of competition.
