SWFL: Bunbury’s women’s side beat Dunsborough, Busselton and Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault have big wins

Bunbury proved too good for Dunsborough in their South West Football League women’s clash at Dunsborough Playing Fields on Sunday, winning by 29 points. While not taking full advantage of their opportunities on a day where the temperature barely nudged above 15C, the Bulldogs proved to have too much experience for a younger Sharks outfit, running out 4.12 (36) to 1.1 (7) victors. Having won all five of their games so far this season, the reigning premiers sit at the top of the ladder with an imposing percentage of 405.56. Bulldogs captain Sarina Tassone was again among her side’s standout performers, kicking two goals in a best afield display, while last season’s leading goal-kicker Daisy Rigby contributed their other two majors. Star midfielders Kloe Bassett and Doma Fedele also made strong contributions for the winners, who lengthened a winning streak which dates back to round 14 of last season out to 12 games. The Sharks, who forced the visitors deep into their defensive 50 on more than a handful of occasions but managed only one second-term goal through Alexandra Howes, were best served by captain Chloe McGill, Maya Goudard and Alyce Smith. Sunday’s other game saw Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault shut out Eaton in a 24-point win at Glen Huon Reserve. A stout defensive performance where the Lions did not allow the hosts to score a single point powered them to a 3.6 (24) to 0.0 (0) victory, their second of the season which has seen them move up to fifth. Young gun Dakota Sexton and Latisha Hough continued standout seasons for the winners, while Julie Geurtjens was their only multiple goal-kicker with two. On Saturday, Busselton proved far too good for Carey Park at Bovell Park, winning by 53 points. The Magpies made amends for a loss to Harvey Bulls in round seven by running out 8.6 (54) to 0.1 (1) winners over the ninth-placed Panthers. Veterans Maddy Obal and Rennie Meadmore led the way for Busselton, who also had six individual goal-kickers hit the scoreboard, with Keeley Foster and Jess Wyatt (both two goals) most prominent in attack.
