SWFL men’s: South Bunbury continue imposing start to season, Dunsborough and Carey Park grab first wins

South Bunbury continued their imposing start to the South West Football League season with a 65-point win over Augusta-Margaret River at Hands Oval on Saturday. The 16.10 (106) to 6.5 (41) victory sees the unbeaten Tigers maintain second spot on the ladder, trailing Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault on percentage. The hosts led by 18 points at half-time before six second-half goals from Jace Cormack broke the game open, fuelling a run of nine goals to the Hawks’ two across the third and fourth quarters. After a big loss to the Tigers in round one, Dunsborough grabbed their first win of the season on Sunday by beating Eaton in a three-point thriller at Glen Huon Reserve. The Boomers led by 20 points at the main break but the visitors responded by holding them scoreless in the third term and booting four goals of their own to take an eight-point lead into the final interval. They then held off a late comeback to run out 9.10 (64) to 9.7 (61) winners. Young gun Jake Green made the difference for the Sharks, booting five goals. In Sunday’s other fixture, last year’s beaten grand finalists Carey Park also opened their account for 2024 with a 63-point defeat of Harvey at Kelly Park. A dominant first half in which they booted nine goals to the Bulls’ one powered the 15.11 (101) to 5.8 (38) win for the Panthers. Small forward Brian Hughes booted five goals for the winners, and Kelvin Lawrence chimed in with two in a best afield display.
