SWFL: South Bunbury beat Carey Park by 85 points to claim eighth consecutive win

South Bunbury’s scintillating start to the South West Football League season continued with an 85-point victory over Carey Park at Hands Oval on Sunday. Having stolen victory at the death against Bunbury last Sunday, the Tigers took care of another local rival in the 19.14 (128) to 6.7 (43) showing, notching their eighth consecutive win and sixth this year by a margin greater than 10 goals. Key forward Blaine Johnson jumped up to fourth on the competition’s goal-kicking chart with six majors in the win, while Richard Bourne and Brayden Jones (both four goals) made handy contributions. Much of the chasing pack has a game in hand but the Tigers sit two wins clear atop the ladder with an imposing percentage of 278.3. * Harvey Bulls bagged their second victory of the season in Sunday’s other fixture, defeating Dunsborough by 15 points at Dunsborough Playing Fields. Trailing by two points at the main break, the visitors broke the game open with a six-goal to two third term before holding on in the last to emerge 11.11 (77) to 9.8 (62) victors and move up to ninth on the ladder. Key forward Jordan Strahan showed his quality in the win, cashing in on his side’s ascendancy by booting six goals, while Sharks young gun Matthew Burgess slotted six of his own in their defeat. * On Saturday, Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault returned to the winner’s list with a commanding 73 point win over Eaton at Glen Huon Reserve. A shock upset loomed when the goalless Lions went into the first break trailing by 12 points, but Derek Hall’s side was able to shore up second spot on the ladder despite inaccurate goal-kicking with a 13.21 (99) to 3.8 (26) win. After some quiet performances in recent weeks, dynamic forwards Jarrod Humphries (four goals) and Blake Offer (three) were back at their best in the win, while Ty Anderson, Jack Fletcher and Connor Carbone continued stand-out campaigns.
