SWNFL 2022: Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault begin campaign with 20-point win over Eaton Boomers

A delay to their season opener seemed to give Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault extra motivation after toppling reigning premiers Eaton Boomers by 20 points. The Lions finally began their 2022 SWNFL campaign on Friday night when they hosted the Eaton Boomers at Leschenault Leisure Centre. It was an even start to the match with both teams matching each other goal for goal within the opening minutes. Although rebounds from defender Lauren Vincent gave the Lions the chance to pull away, Eaton managed to come back with rapid mid-court passes culminating in accurate goals. At quarter time, the scores were level at 12 apiece. The even contest continued into the second quarter with both teams continuing to match each other goal for goal. Eaton’s Jessica Knight was brilliant as goal shooter, consistently scoring for the Boomers, backing up the efforts of mid-courters Kirsty Fitzgerald and Bianca Vellalonga. HBL’s Khea Borkowski was putting on a strong showing as the pace of the contest picked up, quickly positioning herself in open space and helping the Lions start to build a lead. Newcomer Stephanie Brookes was strong in defence, putting the pressure on as much as she could and helping the Lions capitalise on turnovers, resulting in consistent goals from Katie Martin and McKenzie Walker. At half time, HBL held a three-point advantage. The third term saw the Lions off to a flyer as they extended their lead with early goals and the likes of Vincent and Amber Byrne continuing a hot streak of interceptions. Although Grace McArthur and Kasey Joy were putting in a solid defensive effort, the Lions held strong to lead 45-32 at the final change. The final quarter saw the Lions continue to extend their lead while Eaton were fighting hard to make up lost ground. However, things took a turn for the worse when Knight took a fall, clutching at her ankle in pain with just a minute left. When all was said and done, the Lions walked away the victors 60-40. Meanwhile, Busselton continued their hot streak with a 61-53 victory over South Bunbury at the South West Sports Centre on Sunday. Bunbury and Carey Park both had byes.
