SWNFL 2023: Harvey Brunswick Leschenault break Eaton’s undefeated streak with thrilling 49-41 victory

In a stunning display of netball, Harvey Brunswick Leschenault have stunned table toppers Eaton 49-41 to officially end their season-long undefeated streak. The Lions were out to redeem their efforts from round six when they defeated Eaton by three goals but an administrative error saw them forfeit that victory to Eaton. It was a very even start to the top-of-the-table clash at the Leschenault Leisure Centre, with both sides matching each other goal for goal early on. Although quick driving towards Jessica Knight helped Eaton hold a narrow lead, the Lions fought back to level the score with goals via Katie Martin and McKenzie Walker. Defenders on both sides were already putting in the hard yards, with Marley Haisma getting several deflections off Knight, while Michelle Wood impressed in goal defence. By quarter-time, the Lions held the advantage 11-10. While Eaton made a quick start to the second quarter, the Lions started extending their lead with strong driving by Jen Maaka and fantastic teamwork between Brooke and Jess Repacholi. Eleanor Yates seemed to be everywhere on the court for Eaton as they fought desperately to stay in close contention but strong takes by Martin and determination by Jess Repacholi to keep the ball in court, helped the Lions pull away to lead 25-20 at half-time. Following the main break, HBL looked to quickly drive the ball down to extend their lead further, but Eaton looked to capitalise off a defensive rebound. In the midst of strong defence by Lauren Vincent and mounting pressure throughout the mid-court, Eaton found themselves turning over held balls. As the contest became physical, Eaton continued fighting hard to narrow the margin, but the Lions held on to maintain their five-goal advantage at the final change. An early interception by Brooke Repacholi stifled Eaton’s chances of a quick start as the Boomers tried desperately to make a comeback. Despite strong efforts and plenty of fantastic one-on-one contests, the Lions began pulling away to seal the win. A move to put Jasmine Barrett in goal attack seemed to seal the deal as the Lions held strong to win 49-41 to put an end to Eaton’s undefeated streak. Elsewhere, Donnybrook Blackwood edged out Carey Park 46-45 in a thriller at South West Sports Centre.
