Tabtouch Bunbury Stakes/WB&S Vase: Myalup’s Lucy Warwick wins Bunbury Stakes aboard Burnya To Survive

Myalup hoop Lucy Warwick’s reputation as one of WA’s best riders continued at Ascot on Saturday when she guided Burnya To Survive home by 0.8 lengths in the Tabtouch Bunbury Stakes (1400m). The showpiece Bunbury Turf Club event, held in Perth for the second consecutive year due to the club’s re-development project, again provided a fantastic finish. Sitting seventh heading into the home turn, Warwick exited the moving line and forged an outside path after briefly sitting three-wide. In the closing seconds, the Jason Miller-trained gelding had no peer, with his turn of foot too much for Carocapo and Titan Blinders (who ran third) to handle. Warwick believes Burnya To Survive has plenty of upside moving forward. “There is still lots of room for him to improve I think,” she said post-race. “He is only still hitting his straps — I think you will see a better horse in years to come. “He ran through the line well and I think he will settle (with the 1400m distance and potentially above) fine.” Earlier in the afternoon, Albany’s Classic Rogue saluted in the William Barrett and Sons Vase (1500m) for trainer Steve Wolfe, toppling Magnificent Andy by less than half a length.
