Wind farm parts study just hot air

South West Greens MLC Diane Evers says a proposed State government study into local production of wind turbine components in Western Australia is “piecemeal and lightweight”.

Ms Evers said the announcement was a necessary step forward for local manufacturing but had significant shortcomings when it came to harnessing the power of green energy.

“Given that existing announcements as part of the WA Recovery Plan have focused on initiatives such as diesel car maintenance and iron ore wagon manufacturing, significant shortcomings remain when it comes to harnessing the power of green energy,” Ms Evers said.

“The McGowan Government is on the right path by pursuing local supply chain opportunities in the renewable energy sector, but I want to see more from this Government in taking this opportunity to invest in the regions and our future.”

The study is set to look at supply opportunities for wind farms, market trends, and local industry participation opportunities.

Minister for Energy Bill Johnston said WA had the will power for local production and the WA Government was ready to give it a go in collaboration with industry.

“Diane Evers has shown she has no genuine interest in the future of our State — she hasn’t brought any ideas to the table,” Mr Johnston said.
