Christmas cheer milestone: 35,000 gifts delivered to WA children in care
The State Government’s annual present drive reached a milestone on Tuesday to deliver more than 35,000 gifts to children and young people in out-of-home care since the program began in 2012.
500 free family passes to Scitech will be distributed, enabling children in care to enjoy the science discovery centre this year.
The initiative aims to spread seasonal cheer to young people who are unable to spend time with their biological families at Christmas.
More than 40 organisations took part this year — sponsoring children and purchasing gifts based on wish lists created by recipients and compiled by the Department of Communities.
The drive has grown steadily each year, buoyed by the generosity of the community members who volunteer as donors and organisers.
Gifts are distributed state-wide, ensuring children and young people in both metropolitan and regional areas are included.
Child Protection Minister Jessica Stojkovski says she was committed to supporting foster care households in WA.
She announced that the State Government has partnered with Scitech to provide 500 free family passes to the science discovery centre.
Each pass allows entry for two adults and four children and is valid for 12 months.
The contribution, valued at $51,000, will enable up to 1000 adults and 2000 children in care to enjoy hands-on learning and entertainment.
Ms Stojkovski thanked Scitech and the “Christmas Elves” at the Department of Communities who coordinate the extensive logistics behind the annual drive, saying the initiative helped build safe, inclusive and connected communities across WA.
