The popular Perth city to surf fun-run has been cancelled for the third consecutive year.

The Chevron-sponsored event is the latest to be cancelled amidst uncertainty over how WA will cope with the Omicron variant of COVID-19.

The cancellation is a bitter blow for Disability service provider Activ, as the event is their largest annual fundraiser.

However, Activ CEO Michael Heath said that the organisation had to prioritise the health and safety of the community.

“The decision to not hold the event again this year was very difficult, however, the health and safety of all Western Australians comes first so we believe this is the most responsible decision,” said Mr Heath.

“Our aim is to bring back this much-loved community fun run in 2023.

“We remain focused on our ongoing work to support Western Australians with disability, particularly during this challenging time.”

The run was scheduled for August 28, and was likely to attract more than 40,000 runners.

The news follows the cancellation of the much-loved Mandurah Crab Fest, the state’s biggest free regional event. It would have been held on the 19th and 20th of March and was expected to host more than 100,000 locals and visitors.

On Monday, the Perth Festival announced its opening event had also been scrapped in the face of WA’s growing Omicron outbreak.
