There were 56,520 coronavirus tests processed and 41,029 vaccine doses administered at state-run hubs yesterday.

A man who attended the anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne’s CBD on Wednesday, which descended on the Shrine of Remembrance, is being treated in hospital for COVID-19.

“Public health investigations are underway,” a department spokesman said.

“We are urging protesters to get tested should they experience COVID-like symptoms, no matter how mild.”

Deputy Chief Health Officer Deb Friedman had warned the out-of-control protests could become superspreader events, given the infectiousness of the Delta variant and the fact most protesters flouted mask and social distancing rules.

The protests initially began in opposition to mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for the construction sector and the closure of building site tea rooms but morphed into a wider anti-lockdown and anti-vaccine movement.

The fourth day of protests yesterday, however, was a non-event with demonstrators largely a no-show despite flagging potential meeting sites.

Victoria Police made 92 arrests for breaches of public health orders, as well as other matters including outstanding warrants.

Police are preparing for more protests today.

NSW RECORDS 11 DEATHS AMID 1043 CASES

New South Wales has reported 1043 case of coronavirus overnight, with 11 people dying in the State.

The figure brings the total number of cases in the outbreak to 56,799.

Five woman and six men were the latest casualties, with the youngest a man in his 40s.

A NSW Health spokesperson said the man was unvaccinated and had underlying health problems.

There are 1186 COVID-19 patients in hospital in the State, with 232 in intensive care and 110 of whom require ventilation.

As of 11.59pm last night, 84.1 per cent of NSW residents have had one COVID-19 vaccine dose while 56.6 per cent are full vaccinated.

CANBERRA REPORTS 19 INFECTIONS

There have been 19 infections in the ACT, a dozen of which can be linked to other cases or ongoing clusters.

Just four of today’s cases spent their entire infectious period in quarantine, with at least 13 in the community for some of the time.

There are 12 people in hospital, including three in intensive care. Two patients require ventilation.

Nearly 57.5 per cent of the ACT’s eligible population is fully immunised.

More than 83 per cent have had one dose.

EASING OF MASK RULES IN QLD

Queenslanders have been given a slight reprieve in relation to mask wearing after recording no new cases.

Masks are no longer mandatory in public places, as long as people are seated.

It means students and workers can take off their masks when they are sitting at their desks.

Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said people will still had to wear masks at any stage when they were standing and moving around in public environments including retail stores, schools, sporting venues, cafes and bars.
