Boaties rescued from hull of capsized boat off Garden Island
Two people were rescued after their boat capsized off Garden Island on Tuesday morning.
Police responded after water police officers intercepted a mayday call on the marine distress radio channel about 10.15am.
Water police coordinated air assets and rescue vessels to assist in locating the vessel in distress.
“A local commercial fishing vessel located the recreational vessel with two persons sitting on top of the upturned hull,” a police spokeswoman said.
“Both were wearing lifejackets.”
Marine Rescue footage shows the two people being tossed around in the ocean, as just a fraction of their boat remained above water.
One of them was seated on the upturned hull while the other floated beside it.
Three workers aboard the commercial fishing vessel were standing on the deck when the boat approached the pair.
They threw both a survival float and a survival ring into the water, one for each person needing to be rescued.
The pair were taken aboard the commercial fishing vessel and transported to Point Peron in Rockingham.
St John WA paramedics met the pair at Point Peron, and they were transported to Fiona Stanley Hospital for medical assessment.
They were not seriously injured.
As summer approaches, authorities are reminding all boaters to ensure they are properly prepared — with the right safety equipment, including lifejackets, an EPIRB, and a working marine radio — before heading out on the water.
