Harvey bushfire: Emergency warning as residents in parts of the South West are urged to leave immediately

An emergency bushfire warning has been issued for parts of Wellesley, Parkfield, Benger and Wokalup, with authorities warning residents that lives and homes are at risk and urging people to leave immediately if it is safe to do so.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services issued the warning at 11.54am on Tuesday, saying the fire was not contained or controlled and was moving in a north, north-westerly direction with strong winds causing flare-ups and ember attack well ahead of the fire.
The Mayor of Rockingham urged residents in a Facebook post to “please be patient with road closures today”
She added “they’re in place so emergency crews can work safely, and I thank the community for their understanding and cooperation... safety is the priority today... please continue to follow advice from emergency services”
It is believed the fire started around 7pm yesterday 29 December near Warnbro train station and spread quickly due to strong winds and high fuel loads.
Firefighters worked through the night to slow the spread and protect nearby assets, including the train station - with 140 career and volunteer firefighters on scene.
The warning area is bounded by Forrest Highway, Marriott Road, Wellesley Road North, Treasure Road and Rhodes Road in the Shire of Harvey.
“This is a dangerous fire,” the DFES alert said.
“You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive.
“If you become stuck in your car, park away from bushes, cover yourself with a woollen blanket, get onto the floor as the windows may break from the intense heat.”
Residents have been told not to wait and see, with DFES warning that leaving at the last minute could put lives at risk.
There has been no damage to homes but the fire remains uncontrolled and uncontained.
Evacuation routes and centre
Residents are advised to leave now for a safer place, such as the home of family or friends outside the area
DFES has advised people to:
- Leave west via Wellesley Road North
- Leave south via Forrest Highway
- Do not travel east on Wellesley Road
An evacuation centre has been opened at the Leschenault Leisure Centre for those needing immediate shelter.
Safety advice for those unable to leave
DFES warned that extreme heat from the fire could be deadly even before flames arrive.
People unable to leave are urged to prepare to shelter inside their homes, closing all doors and windows, turning off evaporative air conditioners, and choosing a room with running water and a clear exit, such as a kitchen or laundry.
Motorists caught in the area are advised to stop away from vegetation, remain in their vehicle if necessary, and protect themselves from heat as best they can.
Residents not currently at home have been warned it is too dangerous to return.
Fire crews are continuing to respond, but DFES has stressed the situation remains highly dangerous and could change quickly.
Residents are urged to stay alert to official warnings and updates as conditions evolve.
The cause of the fire is under investigation
