The devastated family of a 16-year-old boy who was involved in a tragic motorcycle accident on Tuesday night said watching him fight for his life in hospital is the “hardest thing we’ve ever faced.”

Police said a “group of youths” were riding unregistered motorcycles on Georgetown Drive in Safety Bay when the driver of a Suzuki Grand Vitara — a 40-year-old woman — was involved in an incident with the young rider of a blue Yamaha motorcycle.

A police spokesman said the 16-year-old rider lost control of his bike and crashed, leaving him with serious injuries.

He was rushed by paramedics to Royal Perth Hospital. A hospital spokesperson said the boy was in a critical condition in the intensive care unit on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday, the family released a statement thanking first responders and RPH staff.

“There are no words to describe what it’s like watching your loved one fight for their life,” the family’s statement read.

“Our 16-year-old son and brother is strong, and right now, that strength is being tested more than ever.

“We want to sincerely thank the first responders who were at the scene — your quick actions gave our boy a fighting chance, and for that we are eternally grateful.

“To the doctors, nurses, and staff at Royal Perth Hospital — thank you for caring for him like he’s one of your own. Your compassion and dedication mean everything to us.”

The family thanked WA Police for their efforts “in taking steps to hold the alleged driver accountable.”

Rockingham Detectives have charged a 40-year-old woman with dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm. She is scheduled to appear in court on October 6.

“This is the hardest thing we’ve ever faced,” the statement read.

“We kindly ask for privacy while we focus on being by our son’s side and supporting each other through this incredibly emotional time.

“Thank you for keeping him in your thoughts and prayers.”

Police are continuing their investigation and have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
