A terminal at Perth Airport has been evacuated after a traveller carelessly flicked their cigarette butt into a bin.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services crews were called to the airport at 10am on Wednesday after alarms were activated over smoke coming from a bin.

Two fire crews attended but were stood down shortly afterwards as there were no active flames. However, someone had flicked a cigarette butt into the bin.

Both the international and domestic areas in terminal one were evacuated.

Travellers were able to head back in about 45 minutes later.
