‘Embarrassed:’ Premier Jacinta Allan’s husband caught drink driving after rear ending another vehicle in Bendigo

Premier Jacinta Allan said she is “deeply embarrassed” after her husband was caught drink driving after rear ending another vehicle in Bendigo. Yorick Piper was driving to a supermarket when he hit another vehicle at an intersection on Spring Gully Rd and Carpenter St on Thursday morning. Mr Piper blew 0.05 at a roadside breath test, received a fine and lost his licence. “Unfortunately, Yorick had bumped into the back of the vehicle in front of him as he was coming to a stop,” she told media. “Both he and the other driver were not injured and given it was a minor collision both drivers shared details, shared information, exchanged details after stopping and both continued on their way. “My husband indicated he’d take responsibility for any damage, it was very, very minor damage to the back of the vehicle, a bit of a dint in the back on the vehicle. “We made it clear that we would cover, we will personally be covering the costs of the repairs.” Ms Allan has been contacted for comment, and earlier told media they had celebrated their son’s birthday at a pub the night before and medication may have contributed to the incident. “As a result of the medication mixing with the alcohol from the night before, he simply shouldn’t have been driving the following morning,” she said. “He understands that, I understand that and for this we are both truly sorry. “We’re shocked, deeply embarrassed as well. Physically he’s okay as a result of yesterday but yes we’re embarrassed and shocked and most truly sorry for what has occurred here. “Because street driving and road trauma are incredibly, incredibly serious and there will be victims of road trauma hearing this today and reflecting on their own experience and for that I’m really sorry.” The couple reportedly donated $1000 to the Amber Community, a charity supporting road trauma victims. “The lesson is don’t, don’t get behind the wheel,” she said. “It can happen to our family, it can happen to any family. “Victims of road trauma deserve all of us to be vigilant, vigilant about both our consumption but also if there is any medication that’s being taken how that can also impact.”
