A bushfire in the Mid West has been downgraded to a watch and act, with firefighters containing the blaze.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services previously issued the emergency warning for the Mid West towns of Bonniefield and Bookara in the Shire of Irwin, about 50km south of Geraldton, after the blaze was reported just after midday on Wednesday.

It said the warning was in place for those bound by Brand Highway, Padbury Road, Loxton Drive and Fane Road.

The fire, which is contained but remains uncontrolled, started at the intersection of Melaleuca and Beagle roads.

Residents are advised to stay alert, while motorists are advised to avoid the area.
