DFES issues HAZMAT warning regarding ‘potentially dangerous smoke’ coming from Webberton rubbish fire

People have been warned to stay indoors and avoid the Webberton area with potentially dangerous smoke billowing across the area from a rubbish fire.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services has issued a HAZMAT warning regarding the fire on Beaver Street, impacting an area bounded by Anderson Street, Beaver Street, North West Coastal Highway and Box Street in Webberton.

“A rubbish fire is resulting in a potentially dangerous smoke blowing in a westerly direction and people should avoid the area,” DFES stated.

People in the area should remain inside as a precautionary measure, to avoid the smoke and fumes and keep windows and doors closed as well as air-conditioners switched off.

Motorists have been asked to stay away from the area and people in the area have been urged to take advice from emergency services personnel.

Nearby roads were blocked by police officers as the situation was monitored. DFES has advised that Beaver Street has been closed.

Those with medical concerns should contact their local doctor or call 1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422).

Firefighters are at the scene actively fighting the blaze.
