Firefighters have got on top of a fire at a tyre business in the Geraldton industrial suburb of Webberton, which prompted a HAZMAT warning earlier on Wednesday.

In an update issued at 1.45pm, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services confirmed the blaze on Beaver Street had been contained and controlled.

A couple of hours earlier, DFES warned people to avoid the area or stay indoors as a “rubbish fire is resulting in a potentially dangerous smoke blowing in a westerly direction”.

Black smoke could be seen billowing from the fire from a fair distance away across Geraldton.

The area impacted was bounded by Anderson Street, Beaver Street, North West Coastal Highway and Box Street in Webberton.

People in that area will not longer be affected by smoke, DFES stated in their latest update.

Nearby roads were blocked by police officers as the situation unfolded and was monitored. Beaver Street has since been reopened.

Motorists are still asked to avoid the area, reduce speed and drive carefully.

Firefighters are patrolling the area and mopping up.

It is understood the fire started at a tyre and auto business on Beaver Street. The business did not want to comment when contacted by the Geraldton Guardian, only to confirm the situation was under control.
