Surprise results were a feature in round four of the Batavia Bowling League women’s pennants last Thursday.

Losses for all of the home sides, and evenly matched squads, showed home-ground advantage likely won’t be enough this season and results will go to the players who are most switched on on the day.

Wonthella Gold replaced Northampton on top of the table, beating the Rams on aggregate to go four from four, with the 3-1 (46-37) result over the defending champions an early contender for a season-defining moment for the Golds.

The in-form combination of Margaret Kupsch, Lorraine Brand, Kerry Hagan and Di Knight set up the result, beating Kaye Burton, Pauline Forrester, Diane Mackay and Eva Watson, 26-16.

It was the third from four matches for the quartet, who lead the rink listings.

The Rams’ Dion Delamotte, Lynne Joyce, Anne Labruyere and Julie Clarkson won narrowly over Irene Travaskis, Paula Cripps, Nancy Stone and Julie Clarke, 21-20, also taking their season tally to three wins from the first four rounds.

Denison hit the road to claim a 3-1 (37-33) victory against finals hopeful Geraldton Blue.

The Seagulls’ Pat Belcher, Marie Eaton, Colleen Cruickshank and Anne Doy were the difference in a see-sawing encounter, winning 22-17 over the quality of Audrey Williamson, Julie McCabe, Kerry Koltazs and Marlene Chaushs.

The Blues’ point came courtesy of a one-shot thriller as Jill Adam, Lyn Penn, Sue Waldon and Judy Rosser got over Michelle Leeson, Sandy Crabb, Anne Carlshausen and Gloria Nelson, 16-15.

Geraldton Gold scored their second aggregate win and moved into the four for the first time this season, with an impressive 3-1 (46-32) away result over Wonthella Maroon 1 (32).

The win was set up by the ultra-reliable and consistent rink of Norma Follington, Pam Batten, Barbara Grieve and Mary Perry, who dominated the green to record a 31-9 result over Val Exten, Judy Cream, Ros Dodd and Caroline Armstrong.

Dorothy Stokes, Sandra Brown, Lynn Sutton and Helen Miller squared their win-loss record for the year with a polished 23-15 victory over the Fay Sudilowski rink of Annette Foster, Sue Smith and Phyllis Hayward.
